The airplane departed Addis Ababa-Bole Airport runway 07R at 0838LT and climbed to an altitude of 9,000 feet in good weather conditions. In unknown circumstances, the airplane went out of control and disintegrated in a uninhabited area located in the region of Debre Zeit (Bishoftu), about 30 km southeast of Bole Airport. A huge crater was found at the point of impact and the aircraft was totally destroyed. None of the 157 occupants survived. Apparently, the crew encountered unknown problems and was cleared to return to Bole Airport when control was lost. Both CVR and DFDR were recovered in the morning of March 11. The 737 MAX 8 version was grounded in Ethiopia, China and Indonesia until further notice.
